A delegation representing leading Jewish organizations today called on Under Secretary of State Herbert Hoover, Jr., at the State Department, registering their opposition to a proposed calendar reform, now under consideration by the United Nations Economic and Social Council.
The opposition of these Jewish leaders, who represented all shades of religious opinion, was based on the inclusion in the plan of a blank day device. The delegation explained to Mr. Hoover that this device would result in the disruption of the observance of the Sabbath. Mr. Hoover promised that consideration would be given by the State Department to the petition as submitted.
The delegation included Rabbi Herbert S. Goldstein, president of the League for Safeguarding the Fixity of the Sabbath; Dr. Isaac Lewin of Agudath Israel; Moses J. Feuerstein of the Union Orthodox Jewish Congregations of America; Milton King of the American Jewish Committee; Rabbi B. Brickner of the American Jewish Congress; Irving Katcher of Brith Abraham; Rubin Levenson of the United Synagogue of American; and Bernard Katzen of the Republican National Committee.
