The freedom of this city was bestowed upon German diplomat Dr. Gerhard Wolf, wartime Consul General in Florence, for having at that time saved hundreds of Jews and anti-Nazi Italians from the Gestapo and its Italian counterpart. He was also instrumental, Mayor Giorgio La Pira pointed out during the colorful ceremony in the Palazzo Vecchio town hall, in having Florence declared an open city during the Allied advance.
