The New York City Housing Authority is preparing to demolish a synagogue on the Lower East Side to make room for a housing project, despite the opposition of some 400 worshippers. The synagogue was originally purchased by the Sineer and Wilna Congregation some 70 years ago.
The Housing authority condemned the site in 1951, obtained ownership in 1952 and has collected no rent on the building since May, 1953. The worshippers, according to a spokesman for the authority, have rejected an offer of alternate temporary quarters.
