More than $225,000 had been allocated for relief, rehabilitation, educational and cultural programs for the benefit of Jewish victims of Nazi persecution residing in seven countries in South America, the Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany announced here today. This completes the Conference allocations programs for the current year in the sum of ten million dollars, which represents the Conference share for 1955 of German reparations payments to the State of Israel.
This year’s allocations which represent an increase over the previous year were granted to some 30 Jewish organizations functioning in Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador and Uruguay where more than 110,000 Jewish victims of Nazi persecution are residing. A quarter of all the funds allocated will be directed towards the construction of expansion of Homes for the Aged, one of the most critical needs confronting Nazi refugees in South America.
About 30 percent of the allocations are earmarked for Jewish education, in particular for the acquisition or improvement of school buildings, for the expansion of Jewish teacher training programs and for the establishment of a rabbinical seminary. The remaining allocations will be utilized for the expansion or maintenance of children’s homes, kindergartens and nurseries, for rehabilitation loan funds especially on behalf of recently arrived Nazi refugees, for general and medical relief and for Jewish cultural programs. Local organizations will also contribute substantially to these projects because Conference allocations are granted basically to assist programs for which local organizations are bearing the principal responsibility.
