Vincent Auriol, former President of France, left for Washington today after conferring with prominent American Jewish leaders over the week-end at a luncheon tendered in his honor by the World Jewish Congress at the Hotel Plaza here. M. Auriol noted that he had entered public life more than 50 years ago when he joined Emile Zola and others during the Dreyfus Affair. Since that time, the French leader asserted. “I have always worked against racialism and fought to preserve human dignity, because no peace is possible if racialism is rampant.”
The former French President paid tribute to Israel, noting that that the people of that country had demonstrated to the world what obstacles could be surmounted in building a state through sufficient faith and courage. Dr. Israel Goldstein, who presided, expressed the appreciation of the American Jewish community to the French Government and people for their “friendship and understanding for Israel.”
