A number of Jews were among the 2,000 persons named in the Queen’s Birthday Honors List, issued here yesterday on Queen Elizabeth’s official birthday.
Miss Lily Montagu was named a Commander of the British Empire in recognition of her “services to Jewish organizations.” The 82-year-old Miss Montagu is president of the Union of Liberal and Progressive Synagogues and honorary secretary of the World Union for Progressive Judaism. She is also a well known social worker and author of many books.
The highest honor accorded a Jew in this year’s list went to Edgar A. Cohen, a second secretary at the Board of Trade, who was created a Knight Commander of the Order of St. Michael and St. George. Other Jews on the list included: M. L. Rosenheim, Professor of Medicine at London University, named Commander of the British Empire; Miss H. Kaplan, former secretary of the Glasgow Transport Corporation, named a member of the Order of the British Empire, and Miss Ada Burman, superintending nurse in Queen Alexandra’s Royal Naval Nursing Service, named a member of the Order of the Royal Red Cross.
