The last length of 66-inch diameter concrete and steel pipe was laid yesterday in the Yarkon-Negev pipeline designed to increase Israel’s irrigated area in the southern desert through the use of diverted Yarkon River water.
Yesterday’s ceremonial pipe-laying completed the 66-mile project which will bring water to the Negev within a few weeks. July 19th has been set aside as “Water Day” in the Negev and on that date the first water will be pumped from the Yarkon River, located near Tel Aviv, to the Negev. A total of nearly 22,000 lengths of pipe, manufactured at the Yuval Gad pipe factory, were used in the project.
