Negotiations between the Austrian Government and the Committee for Jewish Claims on Austria will commence in Vienna tomorrow, the Committee announced here today. The negotiations will deal with legislative and administrative measures for alleviating the plight of Jewish victims of Nazi persecution in Austria, and particularly those who were forced to emigrate.
The Committee is represented in these negotiations by the following experts: Dr. Charles Kapralik of London, Dr. Nehemiah Robinson of New York and Dr. Wilhelm Krell of the Federation of Austrian-Jewish Communities, Vienna.
Negotiations between the Committee and the Austrian Government began originally in June 1953 and subsequently were broken off twice. The Committee is resuming the negotiations in the hope that this time the basis for an agreement satisfactory to the organized body of world Jewry which it represents, will be found.
The Jewish claims have received the firm support of the Western Allies. The U.S. Government has repeatedly urged Austria to arrive at a satisfactory settlement, which the U.S. High Commissioner to Austria has described as long overdue. The British and French Governments have adopted similar measures in support of the Jewish claims.
