A street in this city was named for Theodor Herzl, founder of modern Zionism, at a ceremony attended by leaders of the city administration, of the Jewish community and hundreds of residents, Jewish and non-Jewish, of the city.

Addressing the gathering, Levi Neves, municipal councilor, who was president of the city council last year when a bill was passed to name a street for Dr. Herzl, praised the vision of the Zionist leader and hailed the contributions of Brazil’s Jews to the country’s cultural and economic life. Among the others who spoke were Dr. Aron Steinbruch, a deputy.
