The resignation was announced here today of Rev. Father Stephane Valiquette from his position as director of the Canadian Council of Christians and Jews in the province of Quebec. Father Valiquette is one of the foremost Catholic authorities on Judaism and has devoted nearly two decades to Catholic-Jewish goodwill work. He is considered primarily responsible for the program which changed the atmosphere in Quebec, which had been a hot-bed of racialism and anti-Semitism.

Until Father Valiquette’s assumption of the Council post late in 1953, following a pilgrimage to Israel and Rome, the Council of Christians and Jews did not function in French Canada. No cause has been given for Father Valiquette’s resignation, but it is known that his appointment was made upon a temporary and experimental basis two years ago, especially since he was the only Catholic clergyman to assume responsibility for the movement’s work anywhere in the world.
