Vice President Richard Nixon’s forthcoming visit to Israel and the Arab states will have no particular policy purpose other than the development of friendship and good-will between the U.S. and the Middle Eastern countries according to diplomatic sources here.
The official White House announcement last night of the Vice President’s trip raised a question of whether Mr. Nixon would seek to improve relations between Israel and the Arab states. Diplomatic sources said today that the object of the tour is the promotion of good-will and friendship between the United States and the Middle Eastern region. The trip is scheduled for late this year, probably November.
Syrian Ambassador Dr. Farid Zeineddine predicted today that Vice President Nixon’s good-will tour to the Arab-Israel area will not change or ease tensions in the Middle East because “this is a problem where no settlement is in view.” The Syrian Ambassador expressed this belief to reporters after an hour’s consultation with State Department officials on the North African crisis.
