Israel charged today that Syria has embarked on a new campaign of planned provocation intended to increase tension along the Israel-Syrian border. The campaign, which went into high gear about ten days ago, culminated with the kidnapping of an Israel soldier near Kibbutz Golen today, an Israel Foreign Ministry spokesman declared.
The kidnapped soldier was the object of an intensive search all last night and today until blood spots led the searchers to the nearby Syrian border where a blast of gunfire from Syrian positions drove the searchers back. The soldier, Jacob Migvosky of Mefalsim, went hunting yesterday near Kibbutz Golen, in the Huleh region, and never returned. A shepherd reported hearing shots from the border region. The searchers found blood stains, a personal letter belonging to Migvosky, his rifle which had been hit by a bullet, and footprints leading them to believe that three Syrians had ambushed the soldier and then dragged him across the border.
There have been three other clashes along the Syrian border in the last 48 hours. In two incidents yesterday involving Jordanian infiltrates, one Jordanian was killed and several wounded. One incident occurred at Tirat Zvi, on the west bank of the Jordan, and the other in Central Israel.
