The 12th anniversary of the mass deportation of Jews from Rome to their death in Nazi extermination camps was marked here at solemn ceremonies presided over by Chief Rabbi Elio Toaff and in the presence of Italian civil and military leaders and Eliahu Sasson, Israel’s Minister to Rome.

On October 16, 1943, Nazi units dragged about one-fifth of the Jews of Rome out of their homes and sent them off to concentration camps. Of 1,127 known to have been caught and shipped, only 14 returned at the end of the war.
