“Prompt” offers of American munitions for the defense of Israel, and a security pact to batten down the status quo in the Middle East, were called for in a statement sent to Secretary of State John Foster Dulles this week-end by Rep. Hugh Scott, Rep., of Penna. In his message to Mr. Dulles, Mr. Scott urged upon the Western Powers and particularly the United States the “pressing duty” of immediately making available to Israel “the military means for its legitimate defense against the increasing evidence of aggressive intent on the part of Egypt.”
An editorial in the Washington Post and Times-Herald urged that Washington should give arms and a security guarantee to Israel if the Soviet blocks arms deal with Egypt is implemented. The editorial expressed scorn for “the kind of pussyfooting” exhibited by Assistant Secretary of State George V. Allen during his recent trip to Cairo.
