Israel warned Lebanon today not to sign a military pact with Syria, otherwise the Jewish State would have to consider Lebanon a partner in the campaign of hostility launched against Israel. The broadcast came after receipt of reports that Lebanon was on the verge of signing an anti-Israel military treaty with Syria.
In an Arabic language broadcast beamed to Lebanon, the government radio Kol Israel pointed out that up to now Israel had displayed a special understanding of Lebanon’s problems and position, despite its adherence to the Arab League’s stand on Israel. The broadcast also told the Lebanese that signing of such a pact would make Lebanon a satellite of Syria, would draw her into the conflicts of the other Arab states and would “bring her into the first line of fire in the event of danger.” Lebanon can best avoid such dangers by taking a neutral and independent stand, the broadcast warned.
