U.N. Truce Chief Goes to Syria; Israel Ready to Free Captured Syrians

Maj. Gen. E.L.M. Burns, United Nations truce supervisor, will proceed to Damascus tomorrow to discuss the current Israel-Syrian situation with top Syrian leaders, it was announced here today.

Meanwhile, an Israel Foreign Ministry spokesman, commenting on a Syrian request for the return of the 30 Syrian soldiers taken prisoner in Sunday night’s raid on Syrian outposts on Lake Tiberias, revealed that Gen. Burns had been notified of Israel’s readiness to free all the Syrian prisoners on condition that the Syrians free all Israelis they hold prisoner. The spokesman added that Israel will treat the captured Syrian troops in accordance with the Geneva Convention.

Addressing a luncheon tendered him by the Israel Journalists Association. Israel President Itzhak Ben Zvi said that the recent Syrian attacks on Israel borders and on its fishermen had created a situation that no state could possibly allow to continue. He charged that in relation to Egypt. Israel was suffering as an indirect result of Big Power rivalry.
