Dr. Nahum Goldmann, chairman of the Committee for Jewish Claims on Austria, expressed gratification today with the action of the Austrian Parliament in approving establishment of a 550 million schilling fund for the payment of benefits to Austrian victims of Nazism who are currently residing abroad. The fund was negotiated by the Claims Committee, in conjunction with the Association of Jewish Communities in Austria, with the Austrian Government.
Dr. Goldmann noted that the Austrian Parliament’s vote formally completes action on the commitment given the Claims Committee by the Austrian Government to set up such a fund. It is expected that the bulk of the monies in the fund will be paid out to former Austrian Jews.
The Claims Committee indicated today that a certain amount of time will still elapse before a procedure for filing specific claims can be established. The fullest publicity will be given to this procedure and any deadlines set up for filing claims, it was also indicated.
