A limited supply of defensive arms, may be furnished Israel by the United States, Britain and France it was indicated here last night by New York State Attorney General Jacob K. Javitz, Republican leader, addressing the annual dinner of Bnai Zion, fraternal order of the Zionist Organization of America. The dinner at which Mr. Javitz was the guest of honor, was attended by 1,200 persons.
The Attorney General urged the U.S. Government to include Israel in a “regional security arrangement,” in addition to providing arms for Israel’s self-defense. He suggested that the United States become a member of such a security project. “We cannot jeopardize Israel’s survival, or even submit her people to the intolerable pressure of the delayed decision on arms which could drive them to measures of desperation, and which put the situation beyond their control of ours,” he stressed.
Mr. Javitz received from Justice Markewich president of Bnai Zion, a plaque signifying the establishment of a 10,000 tree forest by the Zionist order in Israel named for him. Dr. Harris J. Levine, president of the Jewish National Fund of America, described the “new tone emanating from Washington as the first ray of light since the Soviet blackened the Middle East horizon by turning over war weapons to the Cairo warriors.”
