A resolution pledging the support of 7,000 Jewish benevolent and fraternal organizations to the United Jewish Appeal was adopted here today at a conference of representatives of these organizations held at the Sheraton-Astor Hotel. The delegates unanimously approved full cooperation with the regular 1956 UJA drive as well as with the Special Fund drive for $25,000,000 to meet emergency emigration needs of North African Jews.
In addition to aiding in the general UJA campaign, the Jewish mass organizations pledged themselves to continue their special projects. One set of projects consists of houses for immigrants, settlements for the newcomers, cultural centers, children’s homes, schools, nurseries and other necessary communal institutions. The other project is the raising of funds for emergency bombproof shelters in border towns for the children of the newcomers’ families in case of raids or worse. “Organizations which have undertaken such projects must complete their work upon which the future of these immigrants depends,” the resolution urged.
Congressman Emanuel Celler, who was the principal speaker at the conference, urged that the United States take the lead in promoting a peace settlement between the Arab nations and Israel–“a peace that speaks with honor, not a peace at any price.” “Israel is the one country in that area that is viably democratic, whose orientation to the Western world is beyond question and that has not sought to bargain with the Iron Curtain countries,” he pointed out.
