A declaration urging the United States to make arms available to Israel “without delay” was issued here today by Pioneer Women, a labor Zionist organization representing 40,000 American Jewish women. The declaration was made public after a meeting of the national board of the organization.
Mrs. Chaya Surchin, president of Pioneer Women, said that the board will also ask the U.S. Government to offer a mutual security pact to Israel and to any other states in the Middle East desiring to live in peace with their neighbors. “While we are opposed to an arms race in the Middle East, we believe that-the military capability for safeguarding Israel’s national existence must be maintained, “the declaration said. “We believe the danger of war will be seriously increased if the Arab nations attain a military preponderance capable of use for aggression because of the communist initiative.
“Our government should continue to offer economic and technical assistance and help to resettle the Palestine Arab refugees with impartial friendship to all in the Middle East who will cooperate for peace,” the declaration continued. “We have heard with regret that there are proposals that Israel be asked to yield vital territory of her small area to the Arab states. We believe this is the road to appeasement, not the road to peace.”
