Dr. Azriel Carlebach, editor-in-chief of “Maariv” the newspaper which has the largest circulation in Israel, died suddenly here this morning of a heart attack. He was 47.
Born in Leipzig, Germany, and educated in rabbinical seminaries in Lithuania and Jerusalem, Dr. Carlebach entered journalism in Berlin in 1928 as a contributor to “Die Weltbuehne.” He was editor or staff member of various newspapers in Hamburg, Warsaw, Riga, Lwow, Prague, Paris, London and other large centers of Jewish population throughout Europe before he came to Tel Aviv in 1936 and became editor of the afternoon edition of “Haaretz.” In 1948 he joined “Maariv.”
He was also editor of pocket books and of a monthly book-digest, and a prolific author of books and articles ranging from fiction to ethnology and other scholarly works.
