A new edition of the Talmud–the first in 76 years–will be published in Jerusalem by the World Academy, a federation of scholarly institutions in Israel headed by Chief Rabbi Isaac Halevi Herzog. The last edition was printed in Vilna, Russia, in 1880-86.

An announcement to this effect was made here last night by Charles H. Silver, president of the New York Board of Education, who is a trustee of the academy. He said that the new edition will appear in some 30 volumes, the first of which will be published in Israel this year. The entire publication project is expected to require 10 years. For the first time the text will be punctuated and it will include a digest of unpublished commentaries by rabbis in all parts of the world going back to about the 11th century C. E.
