Israel will make a supreme effort to achieve action on its arms request this week when Secretary of State Dulles returns to Washington.
Israel circles have no knowledge of reported pending U. S. plans for various UN actions in the Near East. In this connection, Israel circles stressed that the arms application is the central and primary consideration in the prevention of war.
U. S. arguments against the Israel arms list, based on allegations involving the relative absorptive capacities of Israel and the Arab states, have been answered by Israel diplomats. An encouraging factor noted by the Israelis is emerging world opinion favoring the arms appeal. Reference might be made to recent editorials in periodicals previously–less friendly to Israel.
