The Bundestag has extended, from the end of 1956 to Dec. 31, 1957, the period during which application may be made for the retroactive legitimization of marriages that were not solemnized at the time because of Nazi racial policies.
The marriages can be legitimized with retroactive effect even where one of the partners has died, provided that the will to contract the marriage was clearly discernible. This is of importance in cases where the surviving partner becomes eligible for a pension if recognized as a widow.
