French Foreign Minister Christian Pineau today indefinitely postponed a trip to Israel to give UN Secretary General Dag Hammarskjold a clear field. He was scheduled to fly to Israel tomorrow. The French Foreign Ministry said that M. Pineau postponed his trip because of the new outbreak of fighting.

Diplomatic sources said the main reason was M. Pineau’s desire not to interfere with Mr. Hammarskjold’s mission. The Foreign Ministry said M. Pineau hopes to go to Israel “as soon as circumstances appear more favorable. “M. Pineau is said to favor Western action to restore an equitable balance of air power between Egypt and Israel to prevent war.
