New York City’s new Commission on intergroup Relations will use its powers of “persuasion and education” equally with its broad investigative powers to eliminate prejudice, intolerance, bigotry and discrimination in New York, Mayor Robert F. Wagner said last night.
The Mayor spoke at the 11th annual meeting of the American Jewish Committee’s New York Chapter at the Hotel Roosevelt where he received the organization’s award for “his outstanding leadership in establishing the new Commission” and “for his constant efforts to eliminate prejudice and prevent discrimination based on race, religion or national origin. The award, an illuminated scroll, was presented to him by Irving M. Engel, national president of the AJC.
