The Haifa Industrial Exhibition–center of a storm of protest by religious Jews because of what they charged was “desecration of the Sabbath” in its remaining open Saturdays–was kept closed here yesterday, following the intervention of Prime Minister David Ben Gurion, who spoke to Haifa’s Mayor Abba Hushi by telephone.

The Haifa municipality announced today that although it would continue to fight against what it termed “enforced conscience,” it had decided that the exhibition would be open only on Saturday nights in order to avoid incidents. The final decision was taken after a stormy meeting in the Municipality Council, at which Deputy Mayor Katz, a member of the religious Poale Agudah party, announced his resignation from the coalition and joined the opposition.
