Thirty-two Jewish graduates of the U. S. Military Academy at West Point, the U. S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, the U. S. Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point and the U. S. Coast Guard Academy at New London, Conn., will be commissioned at the 1956 commencement exercises, it was announced today. They will each receive personally inscribed copies of the bible from the National Jewish Welfare Board’s Commission on Jewish Chaplaincy.
The presentations will be made to the 15 newly-commissioned second lieutenants at West Point, the five newly-commissioned ensigns at Annapolis, the 10 newly-commissioned ensigns at Kings Point and the two newly-commissioned ensigns at New London at special Jewish baccalaureate services arranged by the Jewish chaplains at the Academies.
The services and presentations are part of the year-round religious programs provided at the academies by JWB’s Commission on Jewish Chaplaincy. The Commission, officially-authorized body for recruiting, endorsing and serving Jewish chaplains in the U. S. Armed Forces, is composed of representatives of the three major rabbinical bodies in the country.
