Alexander Kahn, noted American Jewish leader and one of the founders of the Joint Distribution Committee, will observe his 75th birthday tomorrow modestly at his desk as general manager of the Jewish Daily Forward, largest Jewish newspaper in the world, it was learned here today. He turned down all suggestions of public celebrations.
Born in Smolensk, Russia, he came to the United States at the age of 12, While studying law at the New York University, he became interested in the Socialist labor movement to which he later devoted his life. He was one of the outstanding labor lawyers in the country until 1939, when he was elected general manager of the Forward.
Active in the Joint Distribution Committee as vice president, Mr. Kahn is also known for his devotion to Israel. He is a staunch supporter of the Histadrut campaign in the United States and of other Israel causes. He was a member of the Administrative Committee of the Jewish Agency under the League of Nations. He is also active in the United Jewish Appeal, United Hias and numerous other organizations. His wife. Sarah, has been a leader of the Pioneer Women–the women’s labor Zionist group in the United States for many years.
