The only way to get a satisfactory solution of the Egyptian blockade of the Suez Canal against Israel shipping is to get a settlement of the whole Israel-Arab conflict, Selwyn Lloyd, British Foreign Secretary, told the House of Commons today during a debate on United Nations action in the Middle East.
Replying to Laborite questions in the debate, Mr. Lloyd insisted that the discussions now under way in the United Nations Security Council were a better guarantee of ending the Suez blockade than “by threats against Egypt in this House.” In reply to other questions the Foreign Secretary admitted that the governments of the Middle East had not yet permitted full implementation of the agreements on the demarcation line borders and of the posting of UN observers along those lines. These agreements had been negotiated by the governments with UN Secretary General Dag Hammarskjold during his recent Middle East visit.
