Although the absolute number of mixed marriages in Canada involving Jews and non-Jews is not alarming, the rate of increase is very serious, according to figures published here by Louis Rosenberg, demographer attached to the staff of the Canadian Jewish Congress.
Some 3 per cent of Jewish persons marrying in the province of Quebec marry out of the faith. In the other two provinces where a considerable number of Jews reside, Ontario and Manitoba the percentage rises to 7. However, in British Columbia a quarter of all Jews who marry do so outside the community.
The rate of this intermarriage has doubled in Quebec during the past 25 years, and has nearly tripled in Ontario, Manitoba and Saskatchewan. The intermarriage rate seems to be in obverse proportion to the density of Jews among Anglo-Saxons, and to the quality of Jewish educational facilities available.
