A non-Jewish butcher has been given permission to open a kosher meat shop in this city by Chief Rabbi Israel Brodie and the Beth Din of London.
The Chief Rabbi confirmed a previous decision to grant a license to James Ferguson, a Glasgow butcher to open a kosher meat shop on the following conditions. that he set up a separate shop for selling kosher meat, and that the Glasgow Beth Din appoint a “shomer”–watchman-to see that kashruth rules are adhered to.
In a letter to the Glasgow Board of Schechita, the Chief Rabbi noted that it is not a practice to grant such a license to a non-Jew where a community has a Jewish butcher But, the letter continued, he was prepared to make an exception if his conditions were met. A member of the Board of Schechita commented that the decision would make history in this community.
