St. Louis Jewish Philanthropists Build Community Center in Beersheba

Nathan and David Shever, two brothers who are out standing philanthropic leaders of St. Louis, Missouri, announced today that they would contribute $100,000 to the establishment of a cultural and community center in Beersheba. The Shever Center will be erected by the American Fund for Israel Institutions in cooperation with the municipal government of Beersheba. The Messrs. Shever will fly to Israel via El-Al Airlines tomorrow to attend the cornerstone laying ceremony of the Center.

The Shever Center, patterned on the community center movement in the United States, will be a modern building with facilities for child and youth recreation, adult education and recreation, meetings, lectures and seminars; creative expression in music, dance and theatre with special emphasis on the development of a folk art; arts and crafts and a complete physical education program for all ages, including a varied sports program. Opportunity for informal recreation will be offered in the game rooms, lounge and library. The Center will also offer counsel and guidance to its members on educational, vocational and personal problems under the supervision and guidance of trainee social workers.
