The Israel-Jordan Mixed Armistice Commission condemned Jordan today for an attack on an Israeli party of farmers in the Jerusalem area last Wednesday. At the same time, the MAC censured Israel for returning the fire and wounding five Jordanian national guardsmen.
After the seven-hour meeting, the MAC issued a statement “deploring the fact that information issued by Jordanian officers was contrary to the findings” of UN observers. The MAC found that Jordanians had fired on two UN observers and an Israeli liaison officer who was accompanying them to investigate the border clash.
Meanwhile, the Israel Foreign Ministry, commenting on the censure of Israel for replying to Jordan fire, said that Israel regards self defense as an “inalienable right” recognized by the UN Charter and affirmed in the recent cease-fire agreements negotiated during Secretary General Dag Hammarskjold’s visit last April.
