Reuven Shiloah, Israel Minister to the United States, conferred yesterday in the State Department on the Suez Canal situation with Assistant Secretary of State George V. Allen. He said that the discussion was about “the problem of shipping through the Suez Canal as it may affect Israel’s interest.” He declined to say whether he had asked that Israel be included in the conference of 24 nations on the Suez Canal which is to open in London on August 16.
A report from Paris today quoted “authoritative diplomatic sources” as stating that Israel, through her Ambassadors in Washington, London and Paris, has asked for an invitation to the August 16 conference.
Mr. Shiloah noted that Israeli ships have been barred from use of the Suez Canal for several years because of “the arbitrary action of Egyptian authorities in defiance of the Constantinople treaty. Israel is not among the 24 nations invited to attend the London conference on the Suez Canal issue.
