The first exhibition of modern Israeli paintings here was opened at the National Gallery of Fine Arts in a ceremony attended by Israeli representatives, Uruguayan government officials, diplomatic representatives and local artists. The exhibition, which includes the work of 14 Israeli artists, is sponsored jointly by the Israel and Uruguayan governments. In all, 107 paintings are on view.

The opening ceremony heard addresses by Israel Minister M. Hindes, the Rector of the University here, Leopoldo Agorio, and Julio Caporalo Scelta, representing the Uruguayan Ministry of Education. The opening exercises were broadcast by the official government radio system and the Uruguayan press gave it wide and favorable coverage. The ceremony was followed by a guided tour arranged by all local Jewish organizations.
