The South African Board of Jewish Deputies refused today to take any stand on the “Group Areas Act,” a piece of government legislation which critics charge will create ghettoes for Indian and Colored citizens of South Africa.
Board chairman N. Philips, replying to a request by a member for an official view of the legislation, said that it was not the function of the Board to speak for the Jewish community except on matters directly affecting the Jewish community. He noted that on this as well as other political matters the members of the community held varying views and it was impossible for the Board to speak for South African Jewry. Mr. Philips admitted that the question raised humanitarian as well as political questions, but held to his position that the Board could not comment.
