Secretary of State Dulles expressed regret today over recent reprisal raids against Jordan by Israel and said in reply to a question that in the event of an Israel attack on Jordan, the President’s statement of April 9 that, within constitutional means, the United States would give aid to any victim of aggression, would hold.

Mr. Dulles said the recent reprisal raids indicate “a deterioration of the situation and a failure of the efforts which were launched by the Secretary General earlier this year. I think he has the same feeling. We greatly regret the fact that these rather large-scale operations are going on and we believe that they are not consistent, really, with what Mr. Hammarskjold felt were the assurances he obtained earlier this year.
