The American Council for Judaism, at the conclusion of a two-day session of its national advisory board held here, issued a statement today emphasizing that it speaks only for its own members on matters concerning-Jews and that it is “committed to the universal truths of Prophetic Judaism–entirely free of qualifications by the national interests of any foreign-state.”
“We have an abiding sympathy for all of our co-religionists who are in want or distress regardless of their country of residence–including Israel, the statement says. “This is solely a humanitarian interest and is an attribute which is shared by our fellow citizens. Our attitude to foreign nations is purely and simply that of any American. We have no entangling alliance with or allegiance, explicit or implied, to any foreign country.
“We advocate no foreign policy, as Jews, since foreign policy problems are the concern of all Americans regardless of faith. All that we ask is that the foreign policy of our government be formed in the best interests of all the citizens of the United States–without consideration of special pleading by partisan-pressure groups.
“We endorse the lofty moral declaration of President Eisenhower of “one law of justice” applicable to foes and friends alike. We applaud his great efforts to settle the vital and difficult Middle Eastern problems by peaceful means through the good offices of the United Nations. We pledge ourselves to use our best efforts to assist in any way which may be open to us in the solution of these problems,” the ACJ statement declares.
