The anticipated arrival of Jewish refugees from Hungary and Egypt will increase the original estimates of immigration into Israel in 1957 by some 50 percent, it was reported here today in Jewish Agency circles.
A large number of Hungarian Jews are expected in the next few months. According to reports from Vienna, most of the 5,000 or so Hungarian Jews now in Austria have indicated a desire to come to Israel. A few have already come in ones and twos, but the first major group of Hungarian Jews is expected to arrive next week.
A two-day session of the Small Zionist Actions Committee, world Zionist policy making body, opens here tomorrow to consider various problems arising from the general immigration situation as well as these special problems.
Tomorrow prior to the Actions Committee meeting, the Jewish Agency-Israel Government coordination board on immigration and absorption matters will meet. It will discuss, among other matters, the government’s demand that the Agency increase its financial participation in the immigration and absorption programs. The meeting will be presided over by Premier David Ben Gurion. Dr. Nahum Goldmann. Agency president, who arrives here early tomorrow, will participate in the meeting.
Dr. Goldmann, who will remain in Israel for 10 days, will later meet with the Jewish Agency executive to which he will report on world Jewry’s reaction and response to Israel’s Sinai operation. S.Z. Shragai, head of the Agency’s immigration department will report on immigration and absorption matters.
