The Government does not intend to ban the music of “hostile” composers but regards performance of their work here as impolitic, Zalman Aranne, the Minister of Education, told the Knesset today.
Replying to an interpellation dealing with a recent concert by the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra from which a work by Richard Strauss, a pro-Nazi, was dropped, Mr. Aranne said the ministry had advised against inclusion of the Strauss piece but had not banned it. Asked further whether such performances would not hurt and insult the families of victims of Nazism. Mr. Aranne said that while there is unanimity of feeling over composers who are anti-Semitic or pro Nazi, there is no sense to a ban on the notes which, once created have an existence of their own.
