Auguste Lindt, permanent observer here for the Government of Switzerland, was elected today by the General Assembly as United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. A 51-year-old former newspaperman, he has served Switzerland in a number of important diplomatic posts for the last eleven years.
The UN High Commissioner for Refugees is in charge of relief, rehabilitation and resettlement of European refugees, very few of whom are Jews now. However, the number of Jews has increased within the last few weeks due to the Hungarian exodus. It is presumed that some Egyptian Jews being deported by the Cairo Government may also find themselves under the care of the UN commissioner’s administration.
