The majority of the 6,000 odd Jewish refugees from Hungary who are now in Austria are young adults and children and their health appears to be very satisfactory, Dr. Lev Zelmanovits, administrator of the World OSE Union, reported here today upon his return from a visit to Vienna.
During his Austrian trip Dr. Zelmanovits, accompanied by Dr. William Schmidt, head of the Joint Distribution Committee health department, inspected the health facilities available to the refugees. The found that once a refugee registers with the Austrian police he is entitled to full service from the national health services without discrimination. A refugee can be admitted to any hospital or treated by doctors on the social security rolls or, in case of emergency, by physicians in private practice. Arrangements have been made with the Jewish Hospital of Vienna to care for the chronically ill, Dr. Zelmanovitz reported. Other arrangements have been made to supervise the sanitation in accommodations provided the refugees in Vienna and elsewhere in Austria, while plans are under way to turn the Vienna Hebrew School into a day nursery for children of the refugees. Dr. Zelmanovits paid tribute to the work of Dr. Otto Walken, head of the Vienna Community’s health department, for his tireless efforts in behalf of the refugees, especially the children.
