The experience of the Jewish community of Canada has been that a fair and objective discussion of the problem of Christmas programming in the schools is never successful and only induces friction, according to a joint statement of the Canadian Jewish Congress and of the B’nai B’rith circulated to local rabbis and community leaders.
The statement expresses concern over the possibility of public disunity among rabbis and others with access to the press over the question of joint Chanukah-Christmas festivities and over Jewish participation in school holiday festivities. Untoward incidents lead to unfavorable publicity, it said.
The Congress and the B’nai B’rith oppose joint festivities and are prepared to defend the right of any Jewish parent who does not wish to have his child participate in Christmas activities in the public schools.
