A group of 19 American students returned here today from Israel where they attended a specialized six months seminar in the Hebrew language and Hebraic culture. The group had been in Israel since last August. During the students’ stay they also served as teachers in the immigrant camps.
The group consists of seniors enrolled in six Hebrew teachers colleges in New York, Boston and Chicago. For their work in Israel they are receiving academic credit for a semester’s attendance in the American institutions. They are to be graduated next June. The Department of Education and Culture of the Jewish Agency selected these young people for training in Israel because of their outstanding scholarship and interest in becoming professional Hebrew teachers. The Agency awards these annual scholarships to help overcome the shortage of qualified Hebrew teachers in this country.
During the six years that the Agency has been awarding these scholarships, 150 American students have received this training in Israel. Since the men and women who have participated in these seminars through the years have suggested that the present six months term is too limited, it has been decided to extend the study course to twelve months, beginning in the Fall of 1957.
