The first convention of Shachal, organization of Jewish youth from abroad who come to Israel to spend a year or two working in Israel, opened at Beersheba last night. Most of the young members of Shachal come from Latin American countries and the Union of South Africa.
Eliahu Dobkin, Jewish Agency executive member, who opened the conference, reported that the goal of attracting 500 such youth to Israel in 1956 had been surpassed with the arrival of 571 young men and women. All had been assigned to live and work in 12 Negev settlements. The convention appealed to youth in Western countries to join the Shachal movement.
