United Hias Service Becomes Beneficiary of New York U. J. A. Drive

United Hias Service will be a beneficiary of the 1957 campaign of the United Jewish Appeal of Greater New York, it was announced here today. The announcement said that negotiations for an agreement, under which the migration agency will discontinue fund-raising activities in the metropolitan area and rely for its local support on the New York UJA drive, were concluded successfully by Monroe Goldwater, president of the United Jewish Appeal of Greater New York, and Murray I. Gurfein, president of United Hias Service.

Under the new arrangement the United Hias will do no fund-raising in the metropolitan area. However, it will conduct a fall membership campaign with ten dollars maximum dues. Its Women’s Division and Council of Organizations, in addition to their activities in support of the United Jewish Appeal campaign, will continue their programs of assisting newcomers and interpreting United Hias programs to the community. The total budget of United Hias will be made up by allocations from some 400 Jewish welfare funds throughout the country and the New York UJA.

In welcoming the entry of United Hias Service to the New York UJA campaign, Mr. Mr. Goldwater asserted that it “brings greater unity and economy in raising funds to meet the needs of Jewish refugees overseas at a time when their number is increasing with terrible rapidity.”
