Israel moved today toward the construction of another deepwater port along its Mediterranean coast when it signed an agreement with an American and a French engineering company to carry out a year-long, $120, 000 survey of the coastal waters at a point about 11 miles north of Askelon.
Meanwhile, it was announced that a $20, 000, 000 rayon plant to be constructed by Israel Rogosin, American industrialist-philanthropist, will be located within sight of the proposed new harbor. Rail lines, power facilities including a power station and a new road from Tel Aviv are being considered for the new port-industrial center.
A group of American and Israeli investors headed by B’nai B’rith president Philip M. Klutznick has planned other developments for the city, including the construction of homes for 6,000 persons. The proposed port is expected to be an outlet for potash from the Dead Sea plant and oil pumped from Elath.
