A new, combined Israel Government-Jewish Agency effort to obtain loans and investments totalling some $100, 000, 000 for the construction of 29, 000 housing units for new immigrants was announced here at a press conference by Dr. Dov Joseph, Agency treasurer and head of its absorption department. He made his announcement in connection with the opening this week of Brodetsky House, a hostel for professionals honoring the late Dr. Selig Brodetsky, former president of the Hebrew University.
Dr. Joseph revealed that 60,000 immigrants had come to Israel since last October and that 40, 000 more were expected before next October. The hardest immigrants to attract, he said, were professionals because housing facilities for their standard of living were not available. Among the professionals who came in the last eight months, he revealed, were 457 physicians and nurses, 360 engineers and technicians, 148 writers and doctors and 236 teachers and professors.
The hostel contains 72 rooms for the temporary use of single people, couples and even families of professional people who work in the Tel Aviv area. The tenants will move as soon as permanent quarters are available. The rooms have the most modern facilities.
A $1,000,000 mortgage bank which will extend loans for housing in Israel has been founded in South America by some 100 Jewish financiers and businessmen, L. Dultzin, head of the Jewish Agency’s economic department, informed the Agency executive today. On his recent trip through Latin America, Mr. Dultzin reported, he inaugurated a South American economic council to foster investments in Israel.
