The Jewish population of Canada has reached 241,000 and should pass the quarter-million mark by the time of the next federal census in 1961, according to an estimate by Louis Rosenberg, distinguished Jewish demographer. The 1951 census showed 205,000 Jews in the dominion.

The increase is due to a large extent to immigration, which has accounted for the continuous growth of Canadian Jewry during the past 80 years (except for the decade 1911-21 and 1931-46). During the years 1951-57 the increase has been due to 20,414 immigrants and 15,750 from the birth rate. The Jewish population of Montreal is estimated at 100,000 an increase of 20,000 since the 1951 census.
